Privacy Is Power: Why Reproductive Freedom and
Māhū & LGBTQIA+ Rights Are Linked in Hawaiʻi
Michael Golojuch, Jr. (he/him) - December 27, 2025
The United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey disregarded half a century of legal precedent and put the fundamental rights to privacy and bodily autonomy at risk nationwide.
In Hawaiʻi, we know a different path is possible. Our state has a long history of protecting abortion access and reproductive freedom—grounded in the Hawaiʻi State Constitution’s right to privacy and reinforced by lawmakers and communities who understand that these rights are essential to dignity, health, and self-determination.
The movements for reproductive freedom along with māhū and LGBTQIA+ equality and equity are deeply connected. Abortion access, gender-affirming care protections, and the freedom to form loving, intimate relationships all rest on the same core principle: the right to control our own bodies and lives. When courts undermine privacy and bodily autonomy, māhū communities, LGBTQIA+ people, women, and other marginalized communities are among the first—and hardest—hit.
HOKU PAC exists to protect and expand these rights by electing pro-choice, pro-equality leaders at the state and county level in Hawaiʻi. At a moment when federal protections cannot be taken for granted, the importance of who we elect locally has never been clearer. State and county leaders will decide whether Hawaiʻi continues to lead with compassion and justice—or whether hard-won rights are left vulnerable.
That is why supporting and electing candidates who are committed to māhū and LGBTQIA+ equality and equity along with reproductive freedom, and privacy is central to HOKU PAC’s mission—today and for generations to come.
